Morel Mushrooms in the News 2008
APRIL
April 29 - Morel fever: Do you share the location of your sacred morel hunting ground? This year, I’m hoping to break my false morel trend and find more true morels than I have ever found before. I want morels across the spectrum, grey, black, white, all of them. And it would help if someone shared the location of their prize hunting ground with me. Granted, I don’t expect them to because I wouldn’t, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed just the same
April 9 - Put on your mushroom eyes! Mushroom eyes help you to focus and see the mushrooms that have the magical ability to hide in plain site. You can be looking right at a morel and not even see it! But once you've used your mushroom eyes and had seen a mushroom, then you can see even more. It's like they magically appear!
Plenty Magazine - Growing My Own Morels These days, though, one can ostensibly cultivate morels on a particular plot by way of specially inoculated trees and even morel-growing kits. It shouldn't seem too far-fetched because we've long had the ability to grow all kinds of mushrooms on spore-laden logs. April 7 - Turds or Black Morels? It's time to play everyone's favorite game: "Turds? or Mushrooms?" If you answered Turds!, that would be incorrect. These are mushrooms. (Interesting blog post from Doug of what looks like Gyromitra (false morels)
April 7 - Eye Candy from Chris Matherly's Website "Chicken of the Woods", self described as a mushroom hunting madman, posts some awesome photos of morels on his blog, and notes that Chris Matherley of the Morel Mushroom Hunting Club will be on TV, May 6th, at 5:00 pm. on The Travel Channel's Cash and Treasures: Morel Mushrooms - Michigan.
April 5, 2008 Waiting for the morels In the first week of April 2006, as I was walking to my car, past a portion of our front-yard xeriscape rock garden (what else do you expect a geologist to do with all of those extra rocks after field trips?), I noticed a Yellow Morel mushroom rising above the gravel. I stopped and began looking and found a total of about eight morels growing. I had never even seen a morel and here they were growing in my front yard.
